Memory Tapes

An afternoon in late December
The sun's low the sky's turning pink
I'm kicking around my frosty hometown
Let's see who's around for a drink
So let's go where the locals will know us
And the bar staff will call us by name
Let me buy you a beer
I haven't seen you in years
But some people just never change
We drank in the Hope on the night that she left you
And in the Blacks when we passed our exams
The nights with our mates are like memory tapes
And life is just making more plans
On Christmas Eve the Oak's where we're headed
And you know that you'll stay there too late
As you head for the door you'll hear stay for one more
In the morning you'll be a state
That's where I first got to talking
To the best person I've ever met
We spoke about my gigs and zombies I think
That night turned my life on its head
These are the rooms
That memories pass through
The town still loves you
Imagine it's the seventeen hundreds
Can you see me with lead on my face?
What a night it would be if these walls could speak
There must be some tales in this place
The miners are leaving the pits now
Can you hear them walk down Summer Lane?
When the work day was done they'd head straight to the pubs
Some things will just never change
